Case Design

Case Design#

The principal assessment for the course: a semester-long, scaffolded case design project completed in teams of 3–4. Your chosen topic must be substantial enough in scope to warrant a group effort.

Guided by the DTPA framework, your team develops one of two kinds of case:

I. Proactive AI Solution — a proposed AI application that directly addresses a societal issue while maintaining transparency around its biases, ethical boundaries, and real-world impact on communities.

II. Targeted AI Restriction — a proposed limit, safeguard, or policy constraint on an AI system whose deployment poses documented or predictable harm, including algorithmic bias, ethical risks, or adverse community impacts.

Your case must be grounded in robust evidence — peer-reviewed journals, scientific reports, news coverage, empirical studies, economic projections, or historical documentation — documented with APA formatting.

There are two scaffolding assignments before the final case design. Each receives instructor feedback, and the assignment that follows it (the second scaffold, and the final case design) must respond directly to that feedback in a separate document.

Milestones (tentative dates)#

MilestoneDueFocusMinimum length
Teams formedFri, Sep 18
Scaffold 1Fri, Oct 2Problem, stakeholders, initial DTPA scoping500 words
Scaffold 2Fri, Nov 6Evidence base, STS framing, ethical risk analysis, response to Scaffold 1 feedback1000 words
Final Case DesignFri, Dec 4Full draft solution, response to Scaffold 2 feedback2000 words

Word minimums exclude the separate response-to-feedback document. Friday studio sessions are working time for this project — each milestone is a revision of the last, not a fresh document; the project accumulates.
